Find Your Place On The Edge

Posted on June 14 2018

Although combat boots, studded jackets, piercings, and mohawks aren't everyone’s thing, punk and rock ethos are ever present in shaping our fashion and culture.

And after all, who wants to look like everyone else?

Not us.

Relax and have fun exploring to find the "edge" that compliments the rebel in you. There are lots of ways to experiment and kick your style up a notch — like temporary hair colorings, removable tattoos and faux or magnetic piercings.

One of the easiest ways to differentiate your look is through your clothing. The juxtaposition of a punk-inspired Korrupt Label tee underneath a simple suit jacket or blazer, along with jeans is a great way to stand out from the crowd at work, at a casual wedding or other informal event.

Paraphrased from "'Punk Style:' An Interview with Monica Sklar" -- here are three common misconceptions about punk fashion:

1. that you have to dress iconically punk to be punk (WRONG: there are tons of stand alone stylistic elements and subtle cues that are punk)

2. that if you are dressed punk that you are, in fact, punk (WRONG: you might not be at all; it can be all trend and devoid of meaning and/or understanding of the underlying influence, except that of being part of the mass culture);

3. that punk is exclusively for the young; (WRONG: many have aged and still incorporate punk aesthetics and ideals into their daily lives)

    For instance, the ubiquitous and ever fashionable bomber jacket (or other outerwear!) can be dressed up by adding patches, creating an instant one of a kind, punk-inspired look.

    Let’s not forget about hoodies. Many of us love having a favorite zip-up sweatshirt (or two!) to lounge in on a lazy Sunday, throw on to stay warm in chilly weather, or wear to the gym for a workout.

    There are so many ways to combine "high and low" pieces to give your style a more personalized edge, and elevate your entire look. Here are a few of our favorite resources for incorporating punk ethos into your persona.

    The GQ article on going punk ("The 11 Essentials of Punk Style", link above) perhaps says it best -- make punk your own:

    "The whole point of punk was rebelling against the established, and nothing says lemming more than settling for only what's available to you. Rough up your jeans, graffiti a button-down like Mr. Strummer here, and, most importantly, don't give a damn while wearing any of it."

    Another one of our favorite icons, Iris Apfel, sums up fashion and style nicely:

    "Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There's no how-to road map to style. It's about self expression and, above all, attitude."

      Punk rock saved my life man. I could finally just be ME instead of copying other people’s conformity.
